What is Workplace Wellbeing?

Supporting organisations and individuals to improve on these four areas has been proven to lead to happier and healthier teams and individuals, while also improving productivity, engagement and performance. How Wellbeing can impact you and your employees

  • Mental Health

  • Using conservative assumptions, Deloitte estimate a total annual cost to businesses of up £45bn, comprising £7bn in absence costs, £27bn – £29bn in presenteeism. Across industries, the highest annual costs of mental health per employee are in the finance, insurance and real estate industries (£3,300) and on average public sector costs per employee are slightly higher than private sector costs (£1,716 compared to £1,652). Deloitte also find that the costs to employers of poor mental health are disproportionately high among young employees, at 8.3% of average salary compared to an average across all age groups of 5.8%.
  • The results of Deloitte’s updated Return On Investment (ROI) analysis show a financial case in favour of employers investing in mental health. They now find that on average employers obtain a return of £5 for every £1 (5:2:1) invested.
  • Physical Activity

  • The UK’s Chief Medical Officer said if physical activity were a drug, we would refer to it as a miracle cure, due to the great many illnesses it can prevent and help treat. In England, close to one in two women and one in three men are not active enough for good health, costing organisations up to £6.6 billion per year.
  • There are many benefits to organisations that effectively enable their employees to be physically active. Greater Sport highlight improvements in aspects such as: teamwork, communication, turnover, sickness, productivity, confidence and increased energy in their employees, leading to an ROI of up
    to 1:34!
  • Sleep

  • Did you know that over 200,000 working days are lost per year in the UK due to a lack of sleep? This costs organisations up to £30 billion per annum.
  • By helping employees to prevent being sleep deprived, intervene early, and to recover when they are feeling the negative mental and physical impacts of sleep deprivation leads to many wellbeing and work benefits. We can see this through many case studies from organisations such as Anglian Water, NATS, Unilever PLC, and Royal Mail.
  • Nutrition

  • Healthy nutrition covers many areas (including healthy eating, drinking enough water, and alcohol consumption) which all contribute to our overall health. When employees are not looking after their nutrition, it can negatively impact their work, with staff requiring more time off work due to illness, and decreasing productivity.
  • By supporting healthy nutrition and healthy weight management, organisations have seen many wellbeing and bottom-line benefits, as seen through case studies with organisations such as Thames Water.
