Thames Riverfront Place Making Strategy

The Northbank is working with local stakeholders and strategic partners to develop a ‘Thames Riverfront Place Making Strategy’ that will build on the existing work to provide a continuous, high-quality public realm. This is a unique opportunity to reconnect and revive a significant stretch of London’s riverfront and work in collaboration with multiple partners to bring the highest ambition for a world-class city. We are delighted to be working with Westminster City Council and the City of London on the project which spans the boroughs—also working across the London HQ area with neighbouring Whitehall and Victoria Westminster BIDs.

Hawkins/Brown’s urban design studio has been commissioned and will bring design expertise, specific knowledge and passion for London’s riverfront environment through previous work on Thames Tideway.

The initial stages of work will develop an overarching strategy and vision to achieve transformation and regeneration through collaboration and partnership.   The north side of the river has its own unique qualities, including an important transportation route serving central London, a sequence of green spaces with a mix of amenities, cultural heritage, and history for innovation. The strategy will set out a road map for physical enhancements and aligned initiatives which will deliver global city riverfront, for its businesses, visitors, residents and workers, throughout the day and night and around the seasons. The impact of Covid has seen a significant challenge for central London and has also changed people’s priorities. The study will provide a holistic vision to support local area recovery as well as challenges of climate change, inclusivity and resilience. Future-proofing the area for a thriving and active future.
